TIPS ON REPURPOSING CHRISTMAS TREES1) Move the tree outside onto your balcony or yard to make a seasonal feeder and shelter for birds. Decorate it with stringed popcorn, pine cones rolled in peanut butter, nuts or birdseed to attract birds.

2) The tree can be used as a wind barrier for flowerbeds or tender shrubs that typically could get wind burn during our tough winter season. If this doesn’t make sense because you can’t blend the tree in with your existing landscape/garden layout... then cut the tree up into smaller sections for various other use.

3) Cut the boughs and place them around small shrubs, perennials or other plants, especially those spending the winter in planters that could use the extra insulation. chip/mulch entire tree for garden soil. Many communities throughout the country have tree-recycling programs, in which trees are collected from residents and then chopped up to be used as mulch for plants in community parks and gardens. You can find out about your local tree-recycling program by calling your local municipal offices. I find that this to be one of the most productive ways to recycle cut live Christmas trees. Our winters are harsh and often unpredictable. Have any added layers of protection over your perennial garden only helps with the moderating soil temperature so that it doesn’t fluctuate too much; as this can be harmful to plants’ root systems.

4) If you have access to a saw... there are multiple uses with the main trunk of the tree. You can make pot risers... to elevate planters to varying heights and added interest; these risers are also helpful to protect outdoor/decking surfaces from being stained when planters sit in water throughout the growing season

5) Use the main tree trunk as a decorative "rustic" garden borders either as whole trunks lined up one after another or making cross sections and sinking them halfway into the ground around a garden edge.

6) Make Natural Drink coasters – creating cross sectional cuts about .5-1" thick rounds.

7) Create DIY air freshener sachets by collecting the needles. As the tree dries the scented needles can be easily stripped off the branches and collected for this purpose. You can use plastic sandwich bags and poke tiny holes in them with a toothpick or get fancy with a bit of needle work sewing your own pouches in any type of breathable fabric.

8) Ultimately, the trunk can be used as fire wood in your outdoor fire pits. Be careful throwing in whole branches or using the needles because they do send off sparks that are very unpredictable – Evergreens have high levels of creosote, and can cause hazardous smoke and buildup, so please do this with caution. After the burning... the ash has soil enriching nutrients that can be spread throughout your garden for a nice spring boost as well.

9) If you have space you can cut the tree up into sections and save them because the branches and wood have high levels of creosote serves as a great fire starter for summer grilling! just make sure your tree has not been artificially treated or color enhanced with chemical sprays.

Happy Recycling Folks! -- Tu
